Metrology, or the science of measurement, plays a central role in all weighing solutions – including those installed on wheel loaders, forklifts, and telehandlers. Reliable weighing data is the foundation of many businesses. When material flows are based on weight, even small inaccuracies can lead to significant costs or incorrect invoicing.

Two key EU directives govern weighing systems:

  • NAWI (2014/31/EC) – defines how weighing is performed

In addition, operations in Finland are governed by national measuring instruments legislation.

In practice, this means for the customer that:

  • the scale must be type-approved and verified for its intended use
  • the system must meet regulatory requirements
  • weighing results can be used, for example, as a basis for invoicing

Verification of a Weighing System – What Does It Include?

Verification means that the scale is tested and approved for official use.

Typically, this includes:

  • type approval (required before verification)
  • initial verification
  • regular inspections during operation

This ensures that the measurement accuracy meets the requirements of the operating environment.


Accuracy and Resolution – What Does the “e Value” Mean?

One of the most important concepts in weighing is the e value, which defines the scale interval, i.e., its resolution.

In practice:

  • the e value can be, for example, 10, 20, 50, 100 or 200 kg
  • it determines how precisely the weight is displayed

The resolution is influenced by factors such as machine capacity and the e value of pressure transmitters.
For example, with a pressure transmitter rated at 250e:

  • with an 11-ton lifting capacity, 100 kg intervals or smaller 50 kg intervals can be used

In addition:

  • the minimum weighable load is defined by the number of intervals, which is 10e
